The 5 Money Personalities Review and Giveaway

Do you have a resolution this year to get a better understanding of how you and your spouse think about, and use money? How about how it affects your marriage/relationship? If so, I have a great book for you.  The 5 Money Personalities, by Scott and Bethany Palmer is all about helping you learn how you and your spouse view money, and helping you learn how to work with each other without auguring.

Money can be such a hard thing to talk about.  “Money has an impact on every decision you make so it only makes sense that some of those decisions will lead to fights about money.” (quote from page 61 of The 5 Money Personalities)  “When it comes to money  opposites really do attract.  Naturally: that can create tension in a relationship.” (from page 65)   This is defiantly true for my husband and I.  We have gotten much better over the years, but money is one of the things we tend to but heads on.  Learning my own money personality has made it easier to explain how spending money makes me feel.  It is also much easier to understand where my husband is coming from, in the way he spends money.
There is more than just learning about how you think about your money.   The book looks into how money affects your relationship.  As they say it’s not about the money it’s about the relationship.  They call misusing the money in your marriage, financial infidelity.  “Financial infidelity hurts because it goes to the heart of a relationship. It’s a breach of trust, a sign of indifference, a lack of respect.  And that hurts, no matter how much money is involved.” (quote from page 97)

  1. For us, any talk of money restraint leads to an argument, the silent treatment, name calling. In that aspect it’s me, & I am not perfect. It’s sad. Thanks for any help.

  2. Ahhhh money. I think it might be my biggest flaw, definitely in the top 3. This book sounds really interesting. Thanks for the giveaway!

  3. Adrianne at Happy Hour Projects says:

Haha, Kadie, it sounds like you and your husband are a lot like me and mine. We make it work, but it would be really interesting to get some insight, and maybe we can do things better! Thanks for the giveaway!

  4. This sounds intriguing. I would be interested in knowing what personalities my husband and I fall under.

  5. Thanks so much for the info on this book…and the giveaway…Hubby & I are from SUCH different backgrounds…pretty much every aspect of our lives…we’ve counseled and read all types of books but we’ve never come across one like this that focuses on the financial aspect of the relationship. Most simply throw in a paragraph or a chapter on it…and I feel that spending issues can cause so many other problems…I’d love to be able to understand his and my financial habits/beliefs so we can come to some common ground. -D

  6. I read this post yesterday but couldn’t decide what to write to explain how much my husband and I would benefit from this book. Like others, we are in a hard spot financially. We work ourselves ragged, pay the immediate bills such as rent, gas, and utilities and our other debt just stays put – it is not going down!!! We have tried tracking spending in a number of ways and we can’t figure out what our problem is! I feel like this book would help us gain the insight that we need to learn more about ourselves financially so that we can learn the first steps to financial recovery. We are ready for the financial stresses and arguments to be aired out and finally see progress. I know that working on it together, with solid knowledge and understanding, will help us strengthen our relationship with one another and help us as we teach our children how to be independent and financially smart. Thank you!!

  7. I need help! I am terrible with money.

  8. If money personalities are anything like love languages, it would be a huge eye opener to learn our personalities. We make things work, but definitely have some different ideas on what is important to spend or save, etc.

  9. I think money can be a very tricky thing in a relationship. It’s hard to talk about sometimes and can create hard feelings if your views are very different. Is it mine, yours, ours? Each couple has to work it out!

  10. My husband and I are completely different in the ways we spend money…actually I do all the spending and he does all the saving. I have tons to learn and change and would love to read a book together with him on how we could better manage money…and my spending!

  11. I know that handling money issues well is important in relationships. This book would provide helpful information for me and my friends and family.

  43. I would love to read this book!

  44. Kadie, this would be great for my husband and I. He is a small business owner and 2 of our 3 kids are in college. It will be time to prepare for “retirement” but our spending patterns are different and this book just may be a great way for us to understand each other.

  45. Oh goodness! From the day that you posted about this book – I just didn’t know how to adequately describe how much my husband and I need it. I think what caught my eye the most is when you said, “There is more than just learning about how you think about your money. The book looks into how money affects your relationship. As they say it’s not about the money it’s about the relationship…” Our marriage is on the rocks. I think I get over it – and then he does something else and I feel like neither of us are progressing anywhere. I am not easily forgiving him because he continues to make mistakes and no matter what we try – he and I both fail. “They call misusing the money in your marriage, financial infidelity.” We need help. I want the insight that this book has to offer. Please choose us!

  46. I would love this book! I am lacking in the financial area – my hubs is lacking in a completely different way in the financial area. Together – we are epic failures. I would love to read this book – to understand our money personalities as well as the relationship aspect. I am happy you introduced me to this book – and would love a chance to read it! THANK YOU!

  47. Money. The thing we never want to talk about – but comes up in conversation daily! HELP!!!!! We need it!

  48. Did this change your life? I am pretty sure it would change mine! 🙂 I enjoy reading books, articles, anything I can get my hands on that has to do with finances. This one takes a totally different approach than what I have seen and I am very interested in it. I am hoping that it holds the keys to finally gaining some sort of outside perspective on our financial strengths and weaknesses. I know we both have some of each – it’s just identifying them, recognizing them, and working together. But we haven’t been able to figure it out just yet. We would read this book cover to cover and gain as much as possible from it. Thanks for such a helpful giveaway!

  49. I would like to understand why I’m such a sholaholic! 🙂

  50. I would love to read this book. Since I am now making money and helping out with the extra expenses. Money is definitely tricky in every relationship, no matter what.
