Reading Monster Bookmark

I’m kind of in love with the project today.  I started out trying to make a pom-pom owl…..it didn’t work,  they kind of took on a life of their own, and became Reading Monsters.

Reading Monster Bookmark ~ Fun bookmark for everyone

The kids have been just as excited about them as I am.  They are just so stinkin’ cute!

Monster Bookmarks ~ Easy summer project WT

Anyway are you ready to make your own? They are really easy and don’t take much time or supplies.

What you will need:

  • 2-3 colors of yarn, depending on how colorful you want to make your monster {I used Vanna’s Choice Yarn in Barley, and scraps of other colored yarn. The pink is a thick and thin yarn which is what gives it a little more texture.}
  • scissors
  • googly eyes
  • small piece of felt
  • hot glue or craft glue

First you need to make a pom-pom.  There are many, many pom-pom makers out there.  If you have one by all means please use it. I, however, do not have one so we are making our pom-pom the old school way….with our hand.

This is easy to do, start with 2 different colors of yarn hold the strand of yarn between your thumb and palm of your hand. Then start wrapping the yarn around your hand, overlapping where you started.

Wrapping yarn for a pom-pom

Wrap around your hand A LOT. Trust me you will probably feel like you have enough before you really have enough.

Making a Pom-pom

Cut the yarn when you feel you have enough, then cut a small amount of yarn to use as a tie.  Slide the piece of yarn under all the layers of yarn on your hand. Tie a knot as tight as you can holding ALL the layers of yarn together, you don’t want to miss any layers or you will have a mess.

Tie a tight knot around all layers.

Next, cut through all the layers of yarn on the opposite side from your knot.

Now it is time to trim your yarn.  Holding half the yarn ends together with your hand, cut the yarn just above your fingers.

Cuting a Pom-Pom

Do the same on the other side of the knot.  If it seems a little long to you, trim it more. There is no wrong or right size to these, just make them a size you like.

Now that you have your pom-pom we need a tail. This is what is going to be the book mark of our monster.

Take four strands of coordinating yarn and cut them about a yard each. Fold them in half. Using your thumb work a small hole in the middle of the knot you made.  Tuck the strands of yarn through the small hole.  Make sure you use the “folded” part in the middle of the strands of yarn.

Pull enough yarn through the hole to make a large loop. Put the ends of your yarn through and pull it tight.

Braid the tail, making it as flat as you can. Tie a knot at the end of the braid.

Now we need a monster face.  Using a small piece of coordinating felt cut a small oval.  With craft or hot glue, glue the felt to your pom-pom. Now add your googly eyes with a small dab of glue.
