Learning Through Play

Are one of those people that loved/loves school?  If you are, I totally envy you!  I never liked school.  Learning in such a structured environment was difficult for me.  I could blame it on having  a more creative brain, or something like that.  But in reality, my attention span isn’t long enough, and it wasn’t fun.

I can totally relate to the dog in the Disney movie Up.  Squirrel….., I love you,…… Squirrel.

Anyway that is why I have always love to have games around the house that you can learn with.  Mostly because you don’t even know that your learning. Errrrr, I mean the kids don’t know they are learning.  They are kids games after all.

I thought I would share a few of our family favorites.

One of my very favorite games as a child and to play with my children is Husker Du, pronounced Hoo-sker Doo.    I’m not sure how many people are familiar with this game.  It’s a memory game, you lift up the pieces to find a pair of pictures that match.

Everyone in the family LOVES Uno.  This game is great for learning numbers and colors.

My kids favorite game right now is Pop the Pig.  I know it’s a weird name.  My husband bought it for the kids when I was out of town.  I didn’t love it the first time I played it.  However it’s a great game for learning numbers and colors and counting.

Scrabble Junior is great for learning letters and spelling.  This game is for for kids that are a little older, however if you are willing to sit and really do it with them, 3 year olds can have fun with it too.

I could go on and on.  We have A LOT of games.  These are just a few of our favorite learning games.  How about you, what is your  favorite learning game?

  1. My mom introduced us to a fun one: 7 Ate 9. It’s a quick-to-play fast-paced addition/subtraction game. I struggled to keep up with my 10-year-old! We also really like Perpetual Commotion (although it’s not necessarily educational) and Blokus. We have lots of games, too.

  2. Found your blog after I was booed. Five kiddos, amazing! I stay home with my twin boys, 3, and know how crazy things are with just them but I love it. I can only imagine how crazy, wonderful and entertaining it must be to have 5 🙂 Following!

  3. These are some great tips. I’ve got a little one, she’s not even a year yet but thinking ahead 🙂
Love your blog, keep up the great work!

  4. Uno has always been a favorite in our house! Thanks for joining in on the booing fun!

Stopping by from Thee Networking Blog Hop. Still making my way down this awesome list. Love for you to stop by and return the follow when you can 😉
