Speedy Chunky Afghan

 Almost a year ago I posted about a speed afghan I made for as a baby shower gift.  I had said that I would post a pattern, I didn't have a need to make another one until now.  Better late than never here is how I make a speed afghan.  The pattern will be written out in it's entirety at the bottom of the post.

First a quick tutorial on how to crochet with more than one  strand of yarn.
The inspiration for my pattern comes from this one.    I used a size Q hook and three strands of yarn.  Two yarns are a size 4 Worst Weight yarn and one is a size 5 bulk yarn.  You could easily do 3  strands of size 4 and go down to a P or K size hook, or you could use 4 strands of size 4 yarn and stay with the Q.

I have had some people ask me how you hold three strands of yarn at the same time.  It's really not that difficult.

I like to lay my skeins of yarn out on the floor in a row so they don't all get tangled together.  They also make yarn holders that you can use to make sure they don't get tangled.

Then you just take all the strands and wrap them all around your fingers just like you normally would do.  If you have worked with super bulky yarn, it's a similar feel on your fingers.

Then just crocheted like normal.

Abbreviations:
HDC ~ half double crochet
CH ~ chain

Materials needed:

At least 3 skeins of yarn.  Around 1065 yards of yarn.  Yes, it takes a lot of yarn. If you use a bulk yarn it will take more or if you use 4 skeins instead of 3 it will take more.

Q size hook

Tapestry needles

Gauge isn't important for this.

Pattern~

Chain 50

Row 1 ~ HDC into 2nd ch from hook, and in each ch across. CH 2, turn. (48 HDC)

Row 2 ~ 55 ~ repeat Row 1, (48 HDC)  this makes a lap sized afghan or a small child afghan.  You can continue on if you would like to make a full sized afghan .

Tie off and weave in ends.
