Crochet 101 Photo Tutorial & Crocheted Dishcloth Pattern

Have you ever used the crocheted or knitted cotton dish cloths?  They are fantastic!  They last forever and when they get dirty you can throw them in the wash. Some people even use them as face cloths.
Best of all they are super simple to make.  Perfect for a mother's day gift, Christmas, birthday, or anything really.
Today I am going to show you how to make your own, to keep or give as a gift.

I hope you will bear with me as this is my first crocheted tutorial. Crochet tutorials can be kind of hard, because there are so many steps.
I'm sure you will be able to make your own fantastic dishcloths, even if you have never crocheted before now.

You will need:
  • Crochet hook Size H (5.00 mm)
  • Cotton Yarn-I used I Love This Cotton (1 skein of I Love This Cotton will almost make 2 dish cloths. Depending on the size of cloth you like.)
  • Scissors
  • Large needle (Tapestry needle)
I will write out the entire pattern at the end. First we will go step by step.  (you can skip this if you know how to crochet already)

First make a slip stitch with your hook inside.

Tighten your slip stitch to your hook.  One of the hardest things about crocheting is learning how to hold your yarn.  There are many different styles.  This is how I hold mine.  I wrap my yarn around my little finger twice then in front of my 4 other fingers and around my pointer finger.  I hold my knot or project with my thumb and index finger.

First we are going to make our foundation chain.  To make a chain hold the tail of the yarn (the short part not the long part with attached to the skein) Put your yarn over your hook.  In crochet patterns it can be written as YO or yarn over.

Hook your yarn with your crocheted hook and pull it through the loop on your hook.

Taaaaaadaaaaaaaaaaaa you made your first chain.  Now make 36 more.  The chain stitch is the most basic stitch you use it all the time in crocheting.  Go ahead and practice it for a while.

This is what your chain should look like.

I like to make my foundation chain 37 stitches long.  After you have made your foundation chain you are going to start making half double crochet stitches.  This is what makes up your dish cloth.  In a pattern it would be written HDC.

Put your yarn over your hook and then insert your hook into the second chain from the hook.

Put your yarn over your hook and pull it through.  Now you should have 3 loops on your hook.

Put your yarn over your hook and pull it though all three loops.

That's it.  Repeat the stitch to the end of the row.  You should have 35 stitches at the end of the row.  In the beginning it is good to count so you will have straight edges.
I know, you would think you would just be able to see all the stitches but trust me you will want to count.  I have made more things than I care to remember that have looked more like a triangle than a square.

At the end of the row chain 2 stitches, turn your dish cloth and start over with your half double crochet stitch.
For this project (and if you are right handed) you will always work from right to left.  Repeat the rows until your dishcloth is as big as you want it to be.

Here is the pattern:

Chain 30-40 stitches depending on the size of cloth you like.  I chained 37 for the size in the photos.

Row 1
Half Double Crochet in 2nd chain from hook.  Repeat to the end of the row. (35 stitches)  Chain 2, turn.

Row2 -Size you want (27 rows for the size in the photo)
Half Double Crochet in first stitch.  Repeat to the end of the row. (35 stitches) Chain 2, turn.

Tie off and weave in ends.

Usually I leave the edge plain but you could add a simple scalloped edge.

The scallop edging was made by  stitching a single crochet then 3 half double crochet then a single crochet in each 2nd stitch around the dish cloth.

I do hope you will try them.  Let me know if you have any questions..., I will help if I can.  If you learn better by watching someone.  You can always go to You Tube.  Or you can Google any of the stitches I mentioned and it will bring up tons of You Tube videos. Terry at These Peas Taste Funny made  a  different pattern. You can check hers out here.  If you do try them I would love to see them.  You can e-mail me a photo or share it on Face Book.  My media buttons at the top of the page will give you all the info you need.

Thanks for stoppin' by and hangin' out.

I will be linking up to these fantastic parties.

Blog Highlight *Here Comes The Sun*

I'm so excited that Kelly from Here Comes the Sun is here today to tell us all a little more about her blog.  She has such a fun cute blog.  You are going to love it.  Take it away Kelly.

Hello!  I'm Kelly and I blog over at Here Comes the Sun. I've got a bit of everything on the blog from kid's crafts to sewing to home decor.  I love to find new uses for old things and love to decorate on the cheap (but with a designer look)!  I also host a weekly link party called Fabulous Friday.

About Me

I am a stay-at-home mom of 2 kids.  My daughter is 5 and my son is 2 and they keep me VERY busy.  To keep my sanity, I craft and blog during naptime (when I really should be cleaning the house) and late into the night.  My daughter's favorite question is "Do you have a craft for us to do today?"  I say "Why yes, of course." And then I get on Pinterest and frantically search for something that I know we have all the supplies on hand for.  In my "spare" time, I am getting back into running.  I used to do it a lot until an injury sidelined me for a while.

Here are some of my favorite projects on the blog.

I would love for you to stop by and visit!  You can also follow me on Facebook and Pinterest.

Thanks so much Kelly. If you get a chance you should head over and visit her you wont be sorry.  And while you are there leave her some love.

Thanks for stoppin' by and hangin' out.

Crocheted Baby Poncho

The other night I found myself alone with 2 hours to kill.  WHAT?! ALONE?! That never happens. (While I waited for my oldest to get done with scouts.)  I wasn't planning on staying out that long so I didn't bring anything with me to work on.  {GASP}
We had headed to Wal-Mart for some snacks and while I was there I picked up this little pattern book.  It was less than five dollars at my store, and has the cutest baby poncho pattern in it.

I got started on it that night,  I was about half way done when scouts got over.  Another couple of hours and I was finished.  I LOVE the way it turned out.  Little Lotte looks so cute in it!  However she is at the age that sitting still for more than one minute is impossible.
So instead of the cute photo shoot I had in mind. We get the funny trying to get off the chair photo, and going up the ladder photo.

{That sad, raggedy teddy goes with her everywhere.}

So you can get a better idea of what the poncho looks like here it is hanging up.

I used 100% cotton yarn in bright aqua and white. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed making this poncho.  The pattern is an intermediate skill level (that is just because you are working with a V shape), once the V shape started, it came together very quickly.  I would love to make another one, but I don't have anyone else that it will fit. {SAD}
I guess that means it's time to open a shop or something and start selling them. ha,ha.
Have you been working on anything lately that you were surprised by how much you enjoyed?

Thanks for stoppin' by and hangin' out.

I will be linking up to these fantastic parties.

Project Linus Blanket Drive

Petals to Picots has been having a blanket drive for Project Linus.

As Charles Schulz’s Linus character from the PEANUTS® comic strip was comforted by his blanket, Project Linus strives to do the same and more for children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need.

So, Kara from Petals to Picots held a blanket drive on her facebook page.  I committed to making one.  She was hoping for 50 blanket commitments to be finished by April 30th.  I know she met her goal of 50, and more.  So here is my blanket.  It is made with baby flannel. I tried to choose something that would be more for an older girl.  Often we think if little ones needing things like this but big girls need blankets too.  It's 2 yards square.

I didn't crochet an edge this time just added a decorative stitch.  I have some other baby flannel in baby prints cut out to make a pieced blanket.  I wasn't sure if I could get it done by the dead line so I only committed to making one.  When I finish the other I will donate it too.  There is still time to join in.  These little blankets don't take much time to finish.  If you would like to read more about Project Linus you can go here.  If you would like to commit to making one you can go here.  If you would like to see some of the other blankets donated you can go here.

Thanks for stoppin' by and hagin' out.

Ric-Rac Rose *Tutorial*

I shared this tutorial over at Debbie Does Creations on Wednesday last week.  I am showing it here, in case you missed it.

I just learned how to make these ric-rac roses and I am hooked.  They are quick and simple but so pretty.
The original tutorial can be found at The Ribbon Retreat.

Lets get started.  I am using jumbo ric-rac for the red rose. It is 5/8th of an inch wide.  You can use smaller ric-rac but the jumbo is a little easier to work with.

I used two 18 inch pieces of ric-rac.
You are going to start by "braiding" the ric-rac. Which is mostly just twisting the curves around each other.

It does tend to fold up on it's self, just man handle it to lay flat.  I found it easiest to put something heavy on the end of it while braiding.

When you get to the end glue your two pieces together with hot glue.
Then roll your end onto it's self.

Keep rolling,

and rolling.  If you need to, you can place a small dot of hot glue to hold the ric-rac in place as you go.  Try to keep the glue toward the bottom of your rose.  I didn't use any extra glue on this one as I rolled it.

When you get to the end or to a size you like fold the end behind the rose and glue them down.  Trim any extra.

You can leave it like this and have kind of a rose bud.

But I really think the petals make it.  To make the petals you are just going to start to fold down the edges of the ric-rac.

Keep going until it looks like you want it to.  The ric-rac in the middle will not fold down.

This one I put on a ribbon lined hair clip.

But you could do so much with them.  Put them on a card, a hair elastic, a ring blank, a wreath or picture frame.  Or you can put them on a party hat like this one I did in multi colored 1/2 inch ric-rac.

So many possibilities!
Thanks for stoppin' by and hangin' out.

I will be linking up to these fantastic parties.
