Chocolate Petal Birthday Cake

With 5 kiddos we have a lot of birthdays at the Double Wide.  Last week was my youngest’s 2nd birthday. {sniff, sniff, tear} With so many birthdays we have come to the conclusion that they can’t all be “big” birthdays.  But for a few special birthdays like last year when she turned one we go all out.

This year however it was a small affair.  Just the family, grandparents  aunts and uncles.  We didn’t to a lot to decorate but I had to do something for the cake.  I mean I’m making one anyway I might as well take a little extra time to make it cute right?

So, I used this tutorial from Bird On A Cake.  Which, by the way, has got to be one of my all time favorite baking blogs!  She has the most beautiful cakes and goodies.  No to mention that Robin herself is beautiful and just as sweet as one of her cakes.

I did my cake a little different because I can’t ever do things the way I’m “supposed” to.  I like the way mine turned out…. however Robin’s is prettier.  Ah well, I’ll know better next time.

Here’s  what I did.

I don’t know why but when I make homemade frosting I can’t decorate with it.  It tastes great but is to soft to decorate with.  So I use store bought frosting to decorate with.  It tastes fine and works well to decorate with.

I found the cute paper platter at Wal-Mart on clearance 2 for $.75.

I took the easy way out this time and bought the sugar letters and decorations.  I stuck the letters in the frosting I piped around the bottom of the cake.

Following Robin’s tutorial I put the petals on the top 3/4 of the cake.  This left space for the candle and some decorations on the top.

It was quick, easy, and gave the cake that little bit of extra something it was needing.

I may or may not have finished off the last piece for breakfast.  What a sweet way to start the day.

I hope you all had a great weekend and found some way to start your day out great!
Thanks for stoppin’ by and hangin’ out.

What a cute cake! I’ve finished off the last piece of cake a time or two for breakfast. Nothing like a major sugar rush to start your day!
